Happy Tummy

Restaurant Review: Mendokoro Ramenba

Why did we wait so long to try it? We loved it! It would have been our every 2 weeks ramen fix if we hadn’t been too lazy to go out of our radar. Well… Blame it on Makati traffic! It was (and still is) the only thing that’s holding us back.

Surprisingly, one Friday night, my boyfriend and I were both in the mood to brave the traffic. Hence, a visit to Mendokoro! Actually… We couldn’t think of where to eat at that time, so we decided to just go to avoid an argument. Haha!

Mendokoro Ramenba is a small ramen place in Makati that can only accommodate about 20 customers at a time. Known for being a reincarnation of Ramen Yushoken in Alabang, expect it to be packed during lunch and dinner.

It’s not the typical restaurant where you and your friends can seat in a table facing each other. You sit side by side, next to each other, like in a bar.

In the middle of the oval-shaped bar is where the kitchen is. Cool, huh? Watching the cooks prepare my food in front of me was one thing. Giving me the satisfaction that my food will be served fresh and clean was another.

Our wait time wasn’t that bad coz their system is efficient. You pay. You wait. You eat. You leave with a happy tummy. 🙂

What I ordered: Shoyu (P390). It was love at first slurp! It got even better with every slurp! The broth was very rich in flavor but not too overwhelming. It may be salty for some but for me it was… How do I put it… PERFECT! Haha! The noodles, on the other hand, were firm. They were neither soggy nor hard.

And to top it all off, that slice of charred meat was something! I usually ignore the pork in my ramen because of its lean-to-fat ratio. But with this shoyu, there was more meat than fat. Yum!

What he ordered: Tantanmen (P440). Just by looking at his expression with every slurp he made, I could tell it was one good tantanmen! Well, it should be coz it’s one of their bestsellers! I don’t know what it is in that bowl that he loves so much but it has always been his automatic order (or anything close to it) every time we go for ramenI never liked tantanmen! Do you?

Note: Mendokoro’s serving size is smaller than Ramen Nagi, just enough for one person.

What we both ordered: Gyoza (P170/5pcs). While their ramen was the rightful star, their heavenly gyoza tended to share the limelight. We used to think that nothing was comparable to how good Ramen Nagi’s gyoza was until we tried Mendokoro’s. It was tastier!

I wonder what kind of sorcery they put in there that made us want to have more. It was really, really good!

Our judgment: Of all the ramen places we’ve tried so farIppudo, Ramen Nagi, Ukokkei Ramen Ron, Hanamaruken RamenIkkoryu Fukuoka, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka, Ramen Keisuke – Mendokoro Ramenba is the best! We’re really happy we decided to go here. It was worth the traffic and the hassle of looking for a parking spot.

We’re already planning to go next week! Wanna come with? 😉
